  • The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: for these are contrary the one to the other; that you may not do the things that you would. (Galatians 5.17)
    June 30th

Consider carefully what this says. “The flesh” in us is not opposed to us but to the Holy Spirit of God. It is He, not we, who meets and deals with its prompting. And with what result? “That you may not do the things that you would.” I think we have often failed to grasp the import of that last clause.

What “would we do” naturally? We would disregard the divine will and move off on some course of action dictated by our own instincts. The effect, therefore, of our refusal to come out of the cover of Christ and act of ourselves is that the Holy Spirit is free to do His work—free, that is, to meet and deal with the flesh in us, so that in fact we shall not do what we naturally would do. Instead of going off on a plan and course of our own, we shall find our joy in His perfect plan.
